2 DAY COURSES, EAST DEVON ART ACADEMY, SIDMOUTH 2018

21st - 22nd April 2018 – ALLA PRIMA OILS

'Alla Prima' is the term used to describe a painting finished 'in one go' rather than
labour intensive methods using multiple layers and glazes. It is a direct and
spontaneous approach, with the aim of capturing subjects in a free, expressive,
painterly style.

On this course, Paul will be using Water mixable oils, although the techniques
demonstrated will translate to conventional and alkyd oils if you wish to use them.

Starting with fundamental brush skills, including drawing with the brush, scumbling,
wipe-outs and paint-loaded impasto, Paul will guide you through his painting process.
From planning and roughing in your composition, to developing the painting and
adding final details, you will learn a creative approach for completing a small oil
in one hit.

Starting with quick still life studies to develop techniques and practice working
from observation, Paul will also cover working from photographs and how to
distil and simplify the subject.

Some drawing experience will be useful.
A materials and equipment list will be provided.

or telephone Cathy Osbond on 01395 516284 for
further details and booking your place.

13th – 14th October 2018 – FIGURES IN WATERCOLOUR

Adding figures to a scene can help bring a sense of scale, life and movement
to the subject. On this course, Paul will take you through his working methods
for sketching directly from the clothed figure, followed by watercolour techniques
for simplifying detail and suggesting form and movement.
We will then put this into practice, looking at the key points for planning and
adding figures to a simple landscape or street scene.

Some drawing and watercolour experience will be useful.
A materials and equipment list will be provided.
